ANM vs GNM โ The Short Answer
ANM stands for Auxiliary Nursing and Midwifery โ a 2-year diploma for basic, community-level care. GNM stands for General Nursing and Midwifery โ a 3-year diploma that qualifies you for full staff-nurse work in hospitals. One extra year of study, a considerably wider career.
If your goal is to work as a nurse in a hospital, GNM is usually the better investment. If you want the fastest possible entry into community health work, ANM is shorter. Below is the honest comparison so you can decide for yourself.

Career Scope โ Where the Real Difference Shows
An ANM works mainly at the community level: sub-centres, immunisation drives, maternal and child health programmes, and government field roles. A GNM nurse works inside the hospital โ wards, OPD, emergency, operation theatre, labour room โ the roles most private and government hospitals recruit for in volume. Government recruitment routes such as BTSC staff-nurse vacancies and national exams like AIIMS NORCET largely target GNM and B.Sc qualified nurses.
That single extra year of GNM is what separates "assisting with basic care" from "running a hospital ward shift".
How to Decide
- Choose GNM if you want a hospital staff-nurse career, the widest job market, and a route to a degree later โ and you're from any 12th stream
- Choose B.Sc Nursing if you have 12th with PCB and want the degree, higher long-term ceiling, and teaching or leadership options
- Choose ANM only if two years is your hard limit and community-level work is your goal
